Workshop: Understanding how the modern capitalist healthcare system is part of colonial oppression

Hi friends,

Part of what I do after hours as an abolitionist healthcare worker and researcher is organize & strategize on tangible ways we can divest from oppressive care practices while simultaneously building collectivist alternatives to gradually “starve the beast” that is the modern capitalist healthcare system.

To express my gratitude to the to the kind souls who pay to support this newsletter & sustain my mutual aid efforts- I’d like to share a recording of a workshop I led for physicians & mental health care providers who are interested in bridging science with social justice & practicing medicine through a political framework. I’ve also given iterations of this workshop to general audiences & people interested in taking a collectivist approach to managing their health. This particular version of the workshop has some emphasis on psychiatry as a field but it applies broadly to all of medicine/ science.

In the workshop, I break down how the historical colonial foundations of medicine combined with capitalism shape the oppressive approaches that define healthcare and wellness today & what “decolonizing” even means.
